Firing of the U.S. Attorneys
This weeks events in our nation's capital are once again showing the totally out of touch approach to governing by our politicians. At issue is the firing by the Justice Dept., headed by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, of 8 U.S Attorneys from different districts around the country. The Bush administration is technically operating within its rights, since all US Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the president. These positions have always been political appointments, and most presidents dismiss these individuals and appoint others loyal to their team when first coming into office. The current outcry is that the Bush team did so, mid-term and in a punitive manner. One example cited concerns the Washington State gubernatorial election that was won by Democrat Christine Gregoire by 128 votes. Complaints were voiced about voter fraud and apparently the attorney in that district ended his investigation without any indictments. Supposedly, the Bush Administration was annoyed and fired the individual.
If it proves to be the case, as the Democrats believe, that the motive was not justice, but politics, and a grave misuse of power, then we have a serious situation. Of course the Democrats choose not to remember President Clinton's removal of US Attorneys, including one who was part of the investigation of the White Water Banking scandal that for a time appeared to implicate both the President and his wife, and another who was investigating House Speaker Dan Rostenkowski. That ploy didn't work however, and he was convicted of fraud but later pardoned by President Clinton.
What a sorry state of affairs. Both major parties use the Department of Justice to serve their partisan political whims. That is why this whole adventure is a waste of time and a fight that means nothing in the long run. It is rank partisanship from each party and another excellent reason to remove the stranglehold they have on this country. The place to start is by not electing a president from either party! THAT IS YOUR JOB! |
