Meet The Press?
This Sunday on Meet The Press, the number one show for politics hosted by Tim Russert, there were the typical discussions about politics, focused of course on the Presidential election in 2008. There was the who's up who's down ratings and talk about which candidate needs to win which particular primary inorder to secure the nomination of each major party. The round table also spoke about the Republican candidates who refused to attend a debate sponsored by radio host Tavis Smiley to discuss issues of concern to black Americans. Over the summer (and presumably continuing into the fall), Russert has been bringing onto his show one at a time, each of the Presidential candidates from both parties with the idea of getting them on record about the issues and challenges that they would be dealing with if elected President. Tim Russert is reliably on the liberal Democrat side, but in most cases he is usually fair and not afraid to bring up the tough questions. In a surprising moment of candor, Russert complained to his fellow pundits about how the candidates refuse to take a real stand on the issues, noting that they avoid press conferences, hide behind spokespersons, their internet websites, and in general offer up diversions instead of direct committments. Everyone chuckled a little, but Russert seem genuinely perplexed. In essence, he seemed to be asking, don't the candidates want to make their positions known to the voters? Well Mr. Russert, I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but the short answer is no, the candidates do not want the voters to know where they stand on the issues.
Tim Russert is a smart guy and he has been covering politics for over 25 years. How it is that he hasn't figured out that the election process is all about getting elected, about gaining power, and not about ideas on solving the problems and addressing the challenges that face our nation is amazing. Maybe he is naive, but I don't believe that. It is more likely that Russert actually cares about his country, something that cannot be said about every reporter, and certainly not about the elite candidates of the Democrat and Republican parties.
The truth is that that these elites, Democrats and Republicans, and most of the complicit main stream media types, are in it for power, fame, and fortune! They have learned that inorder to acquire more power they must not tell the American people what it is they really plan to do. Not only that, but because their goal is getting elected, they really do not have any principles upon which to build a constituency. They have abandoned the Constitution, rule of law, and will of the people to sound bites that play well on TV.
The politics of this great nation have been given over to this power seeking, let's get re-elected mentality. Inorder to keep power, the elites do not offer leadership, only partisanship, and to them it does not matter. They are all unprincipled hypocrites beholden to their party, the various PACs that fund them, and the money handling lobbyists. Had they an ounce of real principles and true concern for the future of the nation and our children, they would come out openly and say exactly what they stand for, why they believe it, and show how it would be the best thing for America.
It is time we voters, "we the people" who are the rightful owners of this nation, call out these self-centered aristocrats and demand performance. It is time to get their attention and not allow the old lesser of two evils control how we vote. It is time to deny them the Presidency, which is the only shock strong enough to make them pay attention. Another elite President will only be more of the same old same old, and if you expect to do that and achieve a different result, you would be, according to Einstein, acting insane. Enough already, really! |
