The Second Amendment Goes To Court
The 2nd Amendment to our Constitution gives us the right to "keep and bear arms"! It is significant that the founders understood that after the right to free political speech granted by the 1st Amendment, it would be necessary to provide the citizens a way to keep that right, and all others. The importance of the American people being allowed to keep and bear arms is amply demonstrated by the many comments made by the Founding Fathers. There are too many to list here, but two that come to mind quickly:
George Washington "A free people ought....to be armed"
Thomas Jefferson "Laws that forbid the carrying of arms . . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes . . . Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”
The traditional argument by those who oppose gun ownership has always been that the 2nd Amendment is implying the need for the states to maintain militias, and that the right is not granted to the individual. This difference is hotly debated and by no means fully resolved.
The current case heard before the Supreme Court last week, Heller vs.The District of Columbia, is concerned with the DC gun ban that disallows hand guns to be owned by any resident. Heller's argument is that such a law violates his 2nd Amendment rights. The Court has accepted the case after hearing oral arguments, but it will be a while before we hear their decision.
Whatever the outcome, it is sure to generate an outcry in may quarters. Gun rights advocates will denounce any decision that infringes upon that right. The Amendment clearly states that the right "..shall not be infringed". The gun control advocates will be very upset about having more guns on the street, claiming that indivduals are not the militia.
None of those who support more gun control have ever offered a clear rebuttal to the idea that if guns are outlawed, only the criminals will have guns. Nontheless, this concept is true, and the facts demonstrate that the effect of taking away the right to be armed leaves the law abiding citizens defenseless.
Here is an excerpt from an excellent post from Chuck Baldwin, author of Buy A Gun:
"One thing the national news media will always ignore is the practice of lawful self-defense. For example, most people are probably not aware of the fact that American citizens use a firearm to defend themselves more than 2.4 million times EVERY YEAR. That is more than 6,500 times EVERY DAY. This means that, each year, firearms are used 60 times more often to protect the lives of honest citizens than to take lives. Furthermore, of the 2.4 million self-defense cases, more than 192,000 are by women defending themselves against sexual assault. And in less than eight percent of those occasions is a shot actually fired. The vast majority of the time (92%), the mere presence of a firearm helps to avert a major crime from occurring. That is what Congressman Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD) concluded after extensive research."
The truth stands out in support of the right of the people to have the means to protect themselves from criminals. In fact, if looked at objectively, it could be stated that the right to own any firearms is also to protect against the government establishing a dictatorship. If viewed in that manner, there would be no exceptions to gun ownership of any kind, including so-called assault weapons like machine guns.
The constant outcry of the elites who advocate more and more gun control will not end with more regulations on gun owners. Their agenda is the total elimination of all guns and their profound belief that the government will never do anything to establish a dictatorship. These naive folks think in terms of the internationalist agenda, that of a one world government, socialist Utopia, that will bring peace to everyone.
The United Nations has always had as one of its major goals that of eliminating guns from the hands of the people. The UN Millenium Declaration, authorized in the UN General Assembly Resolution 55/2 (2000) commits all nations to banning "small arms and light weapons". The corrupt dictators of this world have no problem with that of course. It is the elites of this country however, that we need to worry about.
Senator Barack Obama, partnering with with fellow elite Richard Lugar, and having the support of other members of congress, has authored the "Global Poverty Act" (S2433). This seemingly well intentioned (aren't they all) but corrupt legislation is written to support the UN measure, and includes a proposal for a tax on America of .7% of GNP, an amount estimated to cost us $845B over the expected time frame of the UN plan. If it passes, it will no doubt be signed into law by our elite President Bush.
As Americans, we need to wake up to the fact that our precious birthright of freedom and self government is under serious attack by the elites who run the two major parties. They are all enamored of the idea of a one world government, a new world order brought to the public's attention by the former President Bush (41). In order to establish such a world government, it is going to be necessary to eliminate the one major obstacle to that goal, and that is the United States Constitution! Even former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor advocated interpreting OUR Constitution in light of the laws of other nations, and lectures around the country promoting this treasonous concept.
The elites in Washington have no problem with that at all. Many aspects of our Constitution are violated continually by laws enacted in congress. The Constitution, rule of law, and will of the people are only sound-bites used at the appropriate TV moment to enhance their election chances. The elimination of our right to own a gun is the major piece of corrupt legislation left undone by the elites. They have already started on the 1st Amendment with the corrupt McCain/Feingold Campaign Finance act. Our President signed it into law and our Supreme Court deemed it Constitutional. Our national sovereignty is being compromised by the Law of the Sea Treaty and wide open southern border, but no one has acted to do anything about those things. Our financial power has been squandered, and the phony "Global Poverty Act" mentioned above will do even more damage.
If the time ever comes that our guns are taken from us, we will find ourselves at the mercy of the elites who will then stop at nothing to bring about their vision of Utopia. Already, through the Security and Prosperity Partnership, sometimes called the North American Union, our President has again illegally compromised our sovereignty. The congress of course, has done nothing to stop this travesty. One would think that with all the supposed hatred of President Bush, the Democratically controlled congress would love to use this to bash the President even further. That they have not is more than enough evidence to show that they too believe in bringing America into line with the rest of the world. Every act and piece of legislation that enhances that prospect has wide support throughout congress. The elites who run this great nation are determined to have their way. They fully intend to promote and bring about their one world socialist agenda.
"We the people", who are the rightful owners of this nation have abdicated our responsibility to govern ourselves as free men and women. We have been duped into giving away this obligation by the elites who have perpetrated the world's biggest scam. They have convinced us that we have no other choice, nowhere else to go, and that we must vote the lesser of two evils in every election. They have engineered the election process to assure themselves continued power by repeating over and over the big lie that only "they" possess the necessary wisdom, knowledge, and experience to govern.
The time has come to reject these elites and the false message they promote of a socialist Utopia. The only thing that has brought about any hope to this world outside of the Creator is the United States of America with the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution as the prime documents that acknowledge our rights as inalienable and God given.
We cannot and must not allow the elites to gain any more power. In fact, we must begin to diminish the power they have already accumulated. To do that, we should deny them the Presidency in 2008. Nothing else will help us more in reclaiming the inheritance that has been stolen from us. |
